These descriptions are based upon our experiences.  Caves, even those considered easy, are dangerous places to be.  Dont be misled into thinking that just because we call a cave easy, means it cant kick your ass.  So do your research (again) and take our opinions for what they are: biased, off-base, jaded opinions.  Click on the Cave Safely button to learn more.

Premonition CaveGPS Coordinates  N39 41.875  W107 10.428
Premonition is located in a buttress on the north rim of Deep Creek Canyon, 1 mile NNW of the Deep Creek Overlook on the south rim.  After several hours of four-wheeling to get to the north rim, we used a rope as a handline to drop down to the entrance, on the southeast side of the buttress.  Once inside, there is everything from walking passage, to squirmways, to chimneys galore.  With 1.19 miles of passage, the decorations make it worth the trip.  From the overlook turnoff, continue west, then northwest about 13 miles to Deep Lake.  From the north side of Deep Lake, follow the Ute Trail (Forest road 618) east as it parallels the north rim of Deep Creek Canyon twelve and a half miles.  Park at N39 41.987  W107 10.308.  On the 7.5 minute topo map, park at the point one-thrid of a mile directly south of the 9870 elevation marker.  From there, hike south 500 feet, then head southwest another 1000 feet to the cave.  Get map

Groaning Cave
Groaning Cave is located on the White River plateau, about 40 miles northeast of Glenwood Springs, not far from the Deep Creek Overlook.   At just under 11 miles of surveyed passage, Groaning is the longest cave in Colorado.  The passages are beautiful, there are lots of lakes and formations inside.  CaverOne has not seen the cave, as getting into the cave is not as easy as getting to the cave.  Access is controlled by the Colorado Cave Survey under the management of the White River National Forest.  There are contacts that need to be made in order to get the key and the combination for the lock on the gate.  CaverOne cannot stress this enough: MAKE NO ATTEMPT TO BYPASS OR DEFEAT THE GATE ON GROANING CAVE OR ANY OTHER GATED CAVE.  This is criminal activity and not worth it.

Twenty Pound Tick Cave -
GPS Coordinates N39 41.074  W107 07.399
Twenty Pound Tick is located in Deep Creek Canyon, and can be accessed from the floor of the canyon.  It is full of water (see photo at left) and the route to the cave is steep and extremely overgrown.  One can only enter the cave for a few feet without SCUBA gear, note the line descending into the water.  That’s the way on!  It was cool just to finally find the cave, but unless you’re geared up to go diving, there isn’t much to see.  Get map
